TRICHOMES

Trichomes are small but form an important part of marijuana anatomy. They make a crystal-like covering for the buds of the cannabis. Trichomes actually come from glands on the leaves, stems, and calyx of the female or male cannabis plant.

Trichomes protect the plant from anything in the wild that could harm them. They secrete terpenes and both CBD and THC.

Pistils

The pistil is part of the reproductive system of a female flower and consists of one or more carpels, a plant’s female sex organ. The pistil essentially houses the ovary portion of a carpel or carpels. Pistil and carpel may be referred to interchangeably when only one pistil and carpel are present in a flower.

Various plant types have pistils that look slightly different but all perform the same functions. A plant may contain a single pistil or several pistils.

In cannabis cultivation, the pistil is desired for its resin content and is often used as an indicator of harvestability.

Flower

The flowers contain the CBD and terpenes that cause you to get high and give people a number of other benefits, interacting with the endocannabinoid system. Flowers only grow on the female plants. This is what is dried out and ground before being smoked.

Fan leaf

If you see clothing or accessories with a cannabis leaf on them as decoration, this will be from the fan leaves. They actually just capture light and don’t have a lot of resin within them. On a cannabis Sativa plant, the leaves tend to be further apart and more sparse.

Sugar leaf

Sugar leaves are where the resin is usually held. They’re small leaves where the buds form, and you can use them in a variety of cannabis products including pre-rolls, or to make THC and CBD extracts.

Stem

This is a term you’re probably familiar with. The stem is the same part of a cannabis plant as any other plant, and it gives structure and stability to the other parts of the marijuana plant.

The top of the stem can be cut off to encourage weed plant stages where the marijuana plant grows more branches and more buds.

Stalk

In botany, the stalk refers to the main stem of a plant that supports the fruit, flower, or leaf. Stalks rise directly from the root and are apart of the plant’s shoot system. With a phototropic response, stalks are also used for vegetative or asexual plant propagation. Plant stalks are crucial in transporting fluids between the shoots and roots.

Seeds

Cannabis seeds are about the size of a peppercorn, ovular in form, and pointed on each end with a ridge that transverses longitudinally on only one side from tip to tip. It is this ridge that opens up during germination. The other side opposite to the ridge is rounded. The body of the seed is brown, but underdeveloped and unfertilized seeds can have an off-white color and are typically smaller in size.

Leaflet

In botany, a leaflet is part of a compound leaf. Specifically, a compound leaf is constructed of two or more leaflets, often three or five, although in some plants many more.

Clover, black locus, and walnut are all compound leaves comprised of three or more leaflets. Fern is also an example of a compound leaf made of multiple leaflets on a single stalk or leaf. Cannabis plants have compound leaves with serrate leaflets, meaning leaflets that are notched and toothed at the edges.

An aspen is an example of a simple leaf that is not comprised of multiple leaflets.

Petiole

The petiole of a plant refers to the location where a stem or leaf blade attaches to the stalk or stem. It is considered a transitional part of a plant.

The petiole is also considered a supportive structure of the plant. Petrioles can be soft and spongy, or rigid.

The origin of the word petiole can be traced to the Latin word petiolus, or peciolus which translates intolittle foot’.

Bracts

The bracts are what can be found around the female’s reproductive area. They are green, with leaves in a sort of “tear shape”. They have a number of resin glands, that actually hold the highest number of cannabinoids within the marijuana plant.
